Multicast RPF Failure: Recovery Using BGP

In the first post in this series, I introduced the concept of IP multicast RPF. In the previous two, I explained the solution to the RPF failure using IGP routing and static RPF. Both of those solutions have serious caveats, amongst others that they may be disallowed in the CCIE lab. Today, I will examine the solution using BGP, or more specifically IPv4 multicast BGP address family.

In the first post in this series, I introduced the concept of IP multicast RPF. In the previous one, I explained the solution to the RPF failure using IGP routing. Since that solution affects not only multicast, but unicast routing, it may not be suitable. Today, I will explore the solution to the RPF failure using static RPF verification – also (wrongly) called “static multicast routing”.

In the previous post in this series, I introduced the concept of IP multicast RPF. In this blog we’ll examine what happens when we experience RPF failure and how we can use routing protocol to recover from it.

IP multicast routing is a subject that many students struggle with and we cover this subject thoroughly in all of our training material. One of the things that is almost certain to give any student a headache is RPF failure. What is it and how do we deal with it? Before we can answer that question, let’s first examine what is RPF to begin with. Next couple of articles in this series will show different methods to recover from RPF failure.
