If you have mastered multicast on the Cisco routers and switches, then you have a huge head start on the Cisco Adaptive Security Appliance (ASA). In this post, we will examine multicast on this Cisco security device.

In order to enjoy multicast routing support on the Cisco ASA, you must first enable it. This is done with the following Global Configuration command:

The Network Time Protocol (NTP) is a critical element for the Cisco Adaptive Security Appliance (ASA). These devices will often rely on the correct time in order to enforce time-based access policies. Even if this is not the case in your implementation, NTP and the correct time that goes along with it is always critical to ensure that important system messages are time stamped with the correct date and time. This can be a critical element in your “chain of evidence” for computer and network attacks that your ASA catches (and hopefully) presents.

For this walkthrough, we have gone to ProctorLabs.com and loaded the Security Workbook 1 – Lab 1A initial configurations for the Security Lab 3.0. What is nice about this is that it will “bootstrap” the routers and switches around the ASA devices and save you some time. OK, that pun was unintentional.

First – I need to just quickly add an interface on Cat3 to VLAN 24 that I will use for this demonstration. This interface connects to ASA-1 interface E0/2:
