A friend told me that I should check out the text Emotional Intelligence 2.0. As I was reading this book, I quickly realized how practical it can be for CCIE candidates. You see Emotional Intelligence is all about your ability to recognize and control your emotions and to understand the impact that they can have on your life.

You see, we are all familiar with IQ. This is a measure that can be assistance to judge how quickly and efficiently we can learn to pass the CCIE. But what about EQ. This is our Emotional Intelligence rating. This can be very important in the pursuit of CCIE. Remember my cornerstones for success?

-Tech Knowledge

- Psychological State

- Physical Wellness

- Strategy

Certainly IQ impacts your technological knowledge, but think about the impact that Emotional Intelligence can have on your psychological state. And remember, the cornerstones all impact each other. For example, if your emotions are out of control and your psychological state is ruined, it can effect all three of the others.

What are the emotions that we need to watch out for in this pursuit?

• Sad – we can feel lonely and isolated from family and friends as we immerse ourselves in study
• Angry – should we experience a NOT PASS this emotion can be powerful
• Afraid – we may be paralyzed with fear regarding a NOT PASS
• Ashamed – many experience this after a NOT PASS event

As I read more of this text, I will be sure to share what tools we should be able to use in our pursuit of CCIE.

1. There is the ever popular Autonomous to Lightweight Mode Upgrade Tool.  Just remember the following for that:
   • You need the lightweight recovery image stored on an accessible TFTP server (which can be the machine the tool is running on)
   • The WLC needs to have telnet enabled
   • The access point needs to have telnet enabled
   • You need to create a text file with the following (one line per AP): ap-ip-address,telnet-username,telnet-user-password,enable-password
2. WCS Autonomous AP Migration Template.  As with the Upgrade Tool, there are a few things to remember:
   • The autonomous AP must have SNMP enabled, with either v1 or v2c community strings, or v3 username and password
   • The AP must have Telnet and SSH enabled.  Yes, if SSH is not enabled, this will fail.
   • The telnet/SSH username and password, as well as the enable password
   • After the AP has been added to WCS, the template can be created and run.  (OK – it can be created first if you want.)
   • The lightweight recovery image needs to be in an accessible TFTP server, which could be WCS itself.
   • The WLC needs to have telnet enabled.
3. The IOS archive download-sw command.  This is a personal favorite.  It requires:
   • The lightweight recovery image needs to be in an accessible TFTP or FTP server (accessible from the AP!)
   • Run the archive download-sw /overwrite /force-reload tftp://tftp_IP_address/filename command and reboot!

And, these are generally recommended.  What if, however, you are stuck in a situation were you don’t have a TFTP or FTP server, or you don’t have that lightweight recovery image?  If the access point in question was already converted from lightweight to IOS, you do have an option.  Here’s the process.

1. Check that there is a recovery folder in flash:

That last line is what we are looking for (note the “rcvk9w8″ in the name.)

2. Enter the following command at the global config prompt: boot system flash:/ap3g1-rcvk9w8-mx/ap3g1-rcvk9w8-mx. Note that the actual folder and system name may be slightly different – copy and paste!

3. Reboot the access point, remembering to save the configuration so that the recovery image will be used on rebooting.

4. Voila!  A lightweight AP again.  If the access point had a static IP address, it will still have one.  So, you may need to use other methods beyond DHCP (and possibly DNS, if you didn’t have a DNS server and domain-name entered in IOS).  There’s always that ip helper-address command, but that’s for another time.

Hopefully this helps you out of a jam like I found myself.  Think like an IE – there’s usually more than two or three ways to skin that rhinoceros.
