Terry Vinson’s CCIE Success Story

Here is what CCIE Terry Vinson had to say about his CCIE journey experience…

“I’ve tried to write my success story about a hundred times since I got my pass notification for the Routing and Switching track. Each attempt, however, has sounded more angry than happy, which is odd because I am ecstatic to have passed. Not having to study anymore and having decided to take a week off from everything but family has given me a lot of time to reflect on why I get so upset when I think about the last five years. I made the realization last night that my anger stems from feeling like I wasted a lot of time, and went up a lot of blind alleys during my preparation. I need to put things in perspective before I explain that any further. I am 45 years old. I have four sons ranging in ages from 6 to 22, I am a self-employed consultant, and in the current economy we have been struggling just to get by. So in a nutshell my preparation came out of my own pocket and I spent way more than I should have to get where I am. I bought materials, in the last three years, from virtually every major vendor I can think of, to include Cisco 360.

QoS Configuration and Monitoring Tools Technology Review

VN:F [1.9.6_1107]

The following is an excerpt from the IPexpert book - IPv4/IPv6 QoS Operation and Troubleshooting

The Modular Quality of Service Command Line Interface (MQC)

The MQC approach consists of three important steps:

  1. The classification of traffic into class maps – Chapter 4: Classification explores this topic in detail. This chapter will completely explore the class map itself. We create class maps with the class-map command.
  2. The QoS treatment of the traffic classifications – policy maps are used to configure the actual QoS mechanisms on the traffic that has been classified. The policy-map command creates a policy map. These policy maps reference the class maps created in step 1.
  3. The application of the policy map to an interface – applying the policy map is accomplished with a service policy. You create a service policy using the service-policy command.

Note: In this chapter, our emphasis is on the MQC itself. Please understand that configuration examples will be shown, but those specific QoS configurations are taught in other chapters of this text. Please try and focus on the MQC itself here and do not be distracted by the additional commands.

That’s right, Terry Vinson aced the Version 4.0 R&S CCIE Lab Exam on May 1. 2012 at RTP, North Carolina, USA. Terry is the co-author of the highly acclaimed Multicast and QoS Operation and Troubleshooting texts sold here at IPexpert. Terry is also the co-instructor for the upcoming live, online CCIE R&S Troubleshooting Bootcamp.

Terry was very excited to test the Quick Fire Troubleshooting Strategy for the CCIE R&S Lab Exam that he developed in conjunction with Anthony Sequeira. He had the opportunity to test this strategy against two separate actual TS sections on two different recent lab attempts. The result? The TS section was passed both times.

Needless to say, Terry Vinson is beaming with pride, and so is IPexpert. For those students in the current Lab Fundamentals and Written Bootcamp, join Terry Vinson on Tuesday, May 8th when he is the Guest Speaker regarding Optimization techniques tested on both the written and the lab exams. Also, watch for Terry’s Success Story along with all the others this Friday here at blog.ipexpert.com.

These are certainly exciting times for Terry and IPexpert.

OSPF virtual-links are a well-know subject to many CCIE candidates. One aspect of them seems to be troubling many students I talked to. That aspect is using OSPF virtual links in conjunction with “ip unnumbered” links. Let’s see what all the fuss is about.

Please note: This article is in a way an answer and the detailed explanation of the problem presented in the Interactive Troubleshooting Blog: OSPF Routing article posted on April 30, 2012.
